Specialised Prison Air Duct Cleaning
The Challenge
After construction work, a prison in Scotland saw its ductwork contaminated with harmful silica dust. This meant further work at the prison could not progress until the entire HVAC system had been cleaned, to ensure the ductwork could provide a healthy air flow throughout the premises.
The prison was held to stringent environmental requirements, and would face expensive operational downtime if not cleaned properly. As such, they required the highest quality of air cleaning available.
As the experts in air ventilation, Duct Clean Services conducted a thorough cleanliness testing of all AHU 05 ductwork. The testing identified moderate levels of dust and ventilation failures throughout the HVAC system. This posed a risk to construction workers' respiratory health and threatened to damage the prison’s recently painted walls.
The Solution
The prison’s contractor instructed Duct Clean Services to undertake a comprehensive pre-comissioning cleaning of the prison’s 17 air handling units and all attached ductwork. This large-scale operation took 17 weeks and a rotating crew of two dedicated technicians to complete, making it Duct Clean Services largest air supply cleaning to date.
Our expert team worked methodically to clean the entire HVAC system to the highest standards. They worked in 10 metre increments to disrupt all dust, utilising Lifa Air Special Cleaner 20 rotary brushes, pneumatic airwhips and high-pressure air lances. They then removed the dislodged particulates with innovative LIFA HepaClean Negative Air technology. Lingering debris was then manually cleaned with a wet vacuum so the ducts could operate at maximum efficiency.
The Outcome
By conducting our air supply cleaning to rigorous TR19 documentation, Duct Clean Services restored a healthy airflow to the prison and allowed them to progress on the construction work without any further delays.
