What is Ventilation Testing?

Ventilation testing is a crucial process that evaluates the efficiency and cleanliness of ventilation systems in commercial and residential buildings. Doing so ensures that the systems provide adequate airflow and maintain indoor air quality, adhering to the required health and safety standards.

Why Do I Need a Ventilation Test?

Building regulations mandate ventilation testing to ensure healthy indoor air quality. Specifically, Part F (England & Wales), Section 3 (Scotland), and Part K (Northern Ireland) of the Building Regulations focus on maintaining indoor air quality standards. Poor ventilation can lead to unhealthy environments, posing health risks to the occupants. Therefore, all newly built dwellings, certain conversions, and commercial spaces must undergo ventilation testing to verify that the systems are up to standard and provide a safe living or working environment.

How Are Vents Tested?

Ventilation testing involves determining the cleanliness and efficiency of ventilation systems. At Duct Cleaning Services, we employ two primary methods to ensure your systems are compliant and functional:

  • 1. Preferred Vacuum Test (PVT):
To assess the quality of air passing through the system by determining the amount of dust at multiple inspection points throughout the system.

    • According to BS EN 15780, three tests should be conducted every 50 metres of ductwork.
    • Our technicians will take samples from the ventilation system using a a 10cm x 10cm template vacuum pump and cassette, which is then sent to a third-party laboratory for analysis.
    • The laboratory results will indicate at each inspection point whether the system passes or fails the cleanliness standards.
    2. Microbial Testing:

    • Following the guidelines of CIBSE TM26, sample media are used to detect microbial matter within the ductwork.
    • These samples are immediately sent to a laboratory for thorough analysis to determine the presence of microbial contaminants.
